The Population of Ireland, taken from the 2006 census was: 4,239,848. The latest estimates from the CSO put the Irish population at 4,459,300. Population growth is continuing to slow although the highest number of births since 1896 in a single annual period (74,500 to April '09) is offsetting somewhat the impact of a high net emigration (up 40% in same period) and drop in immigration (83,800 to 57,300).
