It's not just Ireland that practices the CDW trick, but the figures you quote for excess-cover here are away more than is charged in other European countries. I recently (Aug 2009) hired a car in Germany and searched all the major hire companies on the internet for prices - they all included Airport surcharges in their quoted prices and also quoted how much the CDW waiver would cost per day - from memory, averaging around E7-8 for a economy hatchback. I extended my hire period while there and there was no mention of a credit card fee for paying that.

If you travel a lot, it is possible to take out your own excess insurance from www.insurance4carhire.com, which also covers tyre and windscreen damage - it costs around €62 for a year, or you can buy a daily cover for €5.67 per day, including windscreen and tyres cover. A quick google on "car hire insurance" will show other companies offering similar products

If you feel that the likes of Sean Fitzpatrick or Ulick McEvaddy have the same or similar interests then sure but my point is simply that the interests of the people marching are being in some sort of way abused by the unions to solidify their own jobs. Unions seem to be doing very well out of this recession. They're part of the problem here and they know it. When I say join with others I really speak about talking with those you work with and seeing what you can do as a small collective, understanding how you feel about it. March if that is what is best for you as a group of similarly positioned workers and also as an individual member of society.. not because a union you pay tells you to do it.

A real protest would be to stop paying your union membership and join with others who actually care about jobs, the economy and this country

Like who? Sean Fitzpatrick? Ulick McEvaddy? Right...
